• Marijuana is a drug made from the shredded-up leaves of a plant known as cannabis

• It can be ingested through smoking like a cigarette, consumption (e.g pot brownies), and inhaling vapors through a bong.

• The effects of the drug vary by amount/potency, but a general list of effects includes: increased heart rate, increased appetite,  and a sense of relaxation and sometimes euphoria. Depending on the person, effects can include increased creativity, philosophical thought, and proneness to laughter.

What is Marijuana?

Cannabis plant leaves

• The effect on the mind stems from THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol

• This chemical acts as an agonist, binding to nerve cells and provoking a response by imitating a chemical which normally interacts with that neuron.

• Currently illegal in the United States, marijuana is still the third most used drug, behind alcohol and caffeine.
