There are many types of burns
* Heat burns ( thermal burns ) are caused by fire, steam, hot objects, or hot liquids. Scald burns from hot liquids are most common burns in children and older adults.
* Cold temperature burns are caused by skin exposure to wet, windy, or cold conditions.
* Electrical burns are caused by contact with house hold or industrial chemicals in a liquid, solid, or gas form. Natural foods such as chili peppers, which contain a substance irritating to the skin, can cause a burning sensation.
* Radiation burns are caused by the sun, tanning booths, sunlamps, X-rays, or radiation therapy for Cancer treatment.
* Friction burns are caused by contact with any hard surface such as roads ( road rash ), carpets, or gym floor surfaces.
Motorcycle or bicycle riders who have road accidents while not wearing any or enough protective clothing also may get severe friction burns.
First degree burns- burns that injure the first and second layer of skin
Fourth degree burns- extend through the skin to injure muscle, ligaments, tendons, nerves, blood vessels, and bones. These burns always require medical treatment
There are two types of Second degree burns-
Superficial partial - thickness burns, injure the first and second layers of skin.
Deep partial - thickness burns, injure deeper skin layers
Third degree burns- ( full- thickness burns) injure all the skin layers and tissue under the skin. These burns always require medical attention
The rule of 9s is a standardized system that physicians use to aid in knowing how much of the human body is damaged in a percentage of each major section. This system is only used for second degree burns or greater, because of the severity of higher degree of burns and the importance of accurate healing and care for major burns . The percentage is measured by each section of the body, having a standard percentage no matter the individual. The bodies sections are categorized by 9s meaning 9%.For example ; each arm is 9% of the body, and if you were to get a second degree burn on the front of the arm only and on the whole front surface it would be considered 4.5% of human body is burned, now if it was the whole arm meaning front and back has burned it would be considered 9% . It's considered 9%because of the front surface being 4.5% and the back surface 4.5%and 4.5x2=9% therefore it would be known has 9%of body is burned . This system is to classify the percentage of body damage with second and third degree burns and higher, but to classify the severity of the type of burn is measured within four different degrees .
This system is to classify the percentage of body damage with second and third degree burns and higher, but not to classify the severity of the type of burn is measured within four different degrees.
First degree burns- are just minor burns that affects the outer layer of skin; the epidermis, When you come by a first degree burn you will see just redness and pain the person would show. This type of burn is easily resolved with some first aid care and some time for healing. Sunburn would be a classic example of a first degree burn, that we likely been exposed to or seen in our lifetimes that's been treated.
Second degree burn- mores severe and effect the epidermis and the dermis of the skin. This is why it is also measured by percentage ( rule of 9s ) to ensure clear diagnosis and to ensure the severity of the burn is treated properly. Some of the key signs you will see with this degree are redness, pain, and swelling may also look moist and wet. They may also be blisters and signs of more severe pain than a first degree burn. If the burn is deep enough it may lead to scarring the body, any burn that is a second degree burn or higher is mòre then 10% of the body, they may be recommended to a burn unit for further evaluation, due to these verity of having a higher degree burn.
