Spanish and Portuguese Imperial Rule
The Spanish and Portuguese had very similar ways to control conquered lands in Latin America. The Spanish and Portuguese kings used viceroys to rule over newly conquered lands. These viceroys would act as a regal official who runs a country, colony, or city province and is the representative for their selected area. A viceroy's province or larger territory may be called a viceroyalty. The duration of a viceroy's power was about three years.
Spanish and Portuguese employed very similar ways in controlling the conquered lands of Latin America. The Kings of Spain and Portugal established viceroy rule over the newly conquered lands.
