What Are Greenhouse Gases?
Greenhouse gases are gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect by absorbing infrared radiation.
Examples of greenhouse gases include: carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and hydrofluorocarbons (HCFs). Carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide are found naturally in the atmosphere.
These gases absorb solar radiation to keep
the Earth at the right temperature for life.
Humans are increasing the amount of
greenhouse gases in the atmosphere by
burning fuel for transportation, clearing
land for agriculture and landfills and
using refrigerators and air conditioners.
