Setting:

The setting of "Flags of Our Fathers" is during the battle of Iwo Jima in WWII. The year was 1945, and the next island to take was the small remote Iwo Jima. This Japanese island was desperately needed by the Americans for a refueling base for bombers on their way to mainland Japan. Iwo Jima was the most costly battle for the Marine Corps in its entire history.
