Claude McKay

Hughes was an American poet from Missouri. Among being one of the earliest innovators of the Jazz poetry movement, Hughes was also a social activist, novelist, playwright, and columnist.

Langston Hughes

McKay was a writer originally from Jamaica. He was the son of a peasant farmer and very proud of his racial heritage, and his writing often reflected this. McKay was extremely influential and an important part of the Harlem Renaissance.

Nella Larsen

Larsen earned much of her recognition from contemporary writers. She was originally a nurse and librarian. She became a writer and active member of the Harlem interracial literature and arts community.
