THE NEGRO SPEAKS OF RIVERS

Over the years the African race has grown old and been spread out from Congo in Africa to some southern US states. The author talks about how the African people are very wise and old. He compares the African race to deep rivers both in the Congo and the US.

-Musical rhythm: The poem was written in a rhythm that gave it a nice flow and left the phrase "My soul has grown deep like the river" in the reader's mind.

-Racial Pride: The author portrays the characters as wise and gentle people that have been around for a long time, we know this because of the use of background information.
