A girl made of Darkness
Death presents Liesel's journey of stealing her second book, The Shoulder Shrug, from a book burning on Hitler's birthday along with foreshadowing events that will follow. Death declares that Nazi Germany was built on the Germans' love of burning things, which offered a perfect opportunity for her predisposed to thievery.
The joy of cigarettes
Liesel and Hans finish reading The Grave Digger's Handbook a week before Christmas. Liesel's growing trust for her foster father is seen as she tells Hans her brother's name, Werner. She receives two books: Faust the Dog and The Lighthouse which Hans acquired by trading cigarettes.

The town walker
Rosa makes Liesel deliver the washing as she looks more pitiable. Liesel comes to enjoy it and observes the customers, most specifically, the mayor's wife who is bruised and quiet. At school, Liesel gets the idea to write her biological mother a letter which makes Hans uncomfortable. Later that night, she overhears Hans and Rose discussing her mother and makes her wonder about her whereabouts and who the couple refers as "they".
