Liesel marches with the rest of the youth and gets the sense of pride. The book burning demonstrates how an entire nation could be swept up in such hateful ideas and even Liesel is tempted by adrenaline and mob mentality.

Liesel realizes why her family has been destroyed as a man on a podium salutes Hitler and then gives a speech. She starts to connect Hitler with the tragedies in her life.

Liesel now identifies the Führer as the source of her sufferings and states how she hates him. Uncharacteristically, Hans slaps her to protect themselves. This will let her differentiate what she can and cannot say in public.

The burning dies down and three books survive the blaze. She grabs a

blue book, "The Shoulder Shrug", from the ashes. Liesel's deed has been witnessed by the mayor's wife which make her anxious along with the book burning her skin from underneath.
