1980, Ventura Perez died, and soon after that Lydia started living with a man who fathered her last two children. Some years later she discovered her new husband was a heroin addict, so she threw him out. She would later learn he had infected her with HIV. After she left foster care, Rosie developed a loving relationship with her real father, who lives in Puerto Rico. Of all the Perez children, she was the only one who managed to overcome that tragic family history.
