General Burgoyne was given command of the British forces that charged with gaining control of Lake Champlain and the Hudson River. British general, General John Burgoyne planned to cross Lake Champlain from Quebec to capture Ticonderoga before moving on to Albany, New York where he would meet with the British forces led by General Howe who were coming north from New York City. A smaller force was advancing from the Mohawk River valley led by Lieutenant Colonel Barry St. Leger as result this divided the colonies of New England from the southern colonies.
