Analyze how the English, Dutch, and French colonies of North America were different than the Spanish and Portuguese colonies.
English, Dutch, French-
-Private investors played a large role in in English colonial efforts.
-Individuals paid a lot more money to finance expeditions to America.
-Retained much more control over their colonies.
-Maintained their own assemblies and influenced their choice of royal government.
-Did not migrate to large centralized states like the Aztecs or Incas.
-Did not encounter agriculture people living in dense societies.
-Tried to form treaties with the native Americans and justify why they were taking land
-no viceroys or audiencias
-Relationships w/ indigenous ppls different (no large centralized states like Aztec/Inca)
Spanish & Portuguese-
-Bureaucrats were sent over from Europe to govern the land
-Used viceroys, which were representatives sent by the king
-Took a bunch of land through military actions
-ruthlessly toppled Inca and Aztec Empires
-audiencias (groups of lawyers) observed the viceroys actions and reported them to the king, kept the viceroy in check
