Durkheim was a French sociologist, social psychologist and philosopher. He, along with Karl Marx and Max Weber, are commonly considered the architects of the academic discipline of sociology.

The text Suicide (1897) explores the differences between members of different religious groups (Protestants and Catholics) and pointed to the regiditiy of the Roman Catholic faith as being correlated with lower incidences of suicide, citing social control.
