GPS stands for Global Positing System.GPS was fully operational for civilian use in 1995 and in current time the gps network has around 30 active satellites in orbit.Today GPS is used for many different things a few being navigation climate studies,route finding for drivers ,map making ,earthquake research and climate studies.Now almost all phones have GPS tracking on them.
In 1983 Korean Air Lines flight 007 entered Soviet Airspace after a communication and navigation error and was shot down killing all 269 passengers. This event is what led GPS to go public the government didn't want a repeat of this incident.Gps made air travel more safe and Efficient.
