2. Turkish Military Expansion and the Seljuks

Turkish tribes were pushed out of their homes by Mongols and converted mostly to Islam in the 8th and 9th centuries. The Seljuk were a nomadic tribe that grew in power in the 10th century and used islamic orthodoxy. They also ran their government, a central administration, using taxation. Other Turkish tribes followed the Gazi tradition, and conquered land for Islam while gaining treasure and power for themselves.

When Islam started to spread through Africa and the Middle East, it reached nomadic tribes that had small-scale trade that wasn't even close to the network of trade they had created. Therefore, trade increased dramatically. The islamic religion provided merchants with a safe opportunity to trade. For example, Mohammed was a merchant that learned from his customers. He gained followers and structured a religion around what he learned from them.
