The Vietnam War was a war against communism. It was a 21 year war between the communist north and the south, who was allied with the U.S. It was often broadcasted and very unpopular in the United States.

Forrest was a soldier in the war. The extremity of the bad conditions and situations were represented accurately in the film. For example, it showed how it would rain all the time over in Vietnam.
