On the streets of Dallas, Texas, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald. The event brought intense mourning.

This event was shown accurately in the film. They showed actual footage. The parade where it took place was televised and that's where most people witnessed the shooting. This is also how Forrest saw it.
