Diagnosis
Misdiagnosis of FOP is common but can be avoided simply by examining the individual's toes for the characteristic feature, short great toes. The diagnosis may be confirmed by a thorough clinical evaluation, characteristic physical findings, and sequencing of the ACVR1 gene.
FOP due to it is an rare disease can be commonly misdiagnosed, the following are ways to diagnose FOP.
-examination of toes for short grate toes.
- sequencing of the ACVR1 gene
- malformation of the big toe
-rapidly changing swellings on the head, neck or back.
The following are misdiagnosis that doctors make due to lack of knowledge by doctors on FOP.
-Cancer
-aggressive juvenile fibromatosis also called desmoid tumors, and
-progressive osseous heteroplasia which is another rare disease characterized by the abnormal growth of bone.
