The Big Picture

Appendicitis is the inflammation of the appendix, an accessory organ that no one really knows the function of. It is believed that early in life it was used as protection when eating raw meat before fire came along, but now it no longer has an important function. Appendicitis is always a medical emergency always requiring the surgical removal of the small sac that is attached to the large intestine.
