The contrasting themes and traditions in Classical and Baroque Sculpture

03

European Colonies

Transatlantic voyages did not only result in irrevocable changes to the biological landscape of the Americas (e.g. disease, new crops, domesticated animals), but they also allowed humanity to become more socioculturally and ethnically intertwined. The English, Dutch, and French colonies of North America were a more authentic representation of this belief, whereas the Spanish and Portuguese only fulfilled a few of its constituents. In general, these two colonial societies set on divergent cultural, political, and economic paths once they all left the heartland of Europe. After their arrival in the New World, drastic shifts in their settlements and geography, population sources, government, religion, economy, population growth, and relations with the Native Americans can be observed.
