Multicultural Societies

85% of migrants from Portugal were male, not many females. Men went to find female partners in the slave and native populations in order to increase their numbers. It was often more common for men in Brazil and other Portuguese colonies to have relationships with other people besides the Spanish. They also maintained a strict social hierarchy like listed to the right.

Peninsulares were people born in the Iberian Peninsula. Criollos or Creoles were those born in the Americas with Iberian parents. Mestizos were from Iberia and were native. Other mixed races were:
