When Children Have Children, 2
Teenage mothers are typically uncertain about their new role. They may also feel distress and pressure because of the constant demands of taking care of a baby. Babies may be adorable, but for teenagers, looking after a newborn can be stressful, tiring or even irritating.
The babies of teen mothers are therefore often at risk of neglect and abuse. Parenting classes could help many teen mothers prepare for some of the many unknown aspects of motherhood.
Most pregnant teens fear the prejudiced attitudes which they risk being met with from other people because of their situation. Therefore, many teen mothers-to-be do not seek proper prenatal care. They do not receive guidance and advice from doctors and they do not attend regular check-ups. Many pregnant teens are unaware of the lifestyle changes they have to make in order to take care of themselves and their child. Studies show that many pregnant teens do not stop smoking and drinking after they become pregnant – this greatly increases the risk of complications for both the mother and child.
Counselling should be available to the pregnant teenagers and their families, and consultations with a psychiatrist should be offered to the pregnant girl when needed. It is important that the teen receives proper help in order to consider the different options available.
Ideally, teenagers should be able to access information about pregnancy and contraception from different places.
Free clinics offer reproductive information and guidance about birth control, and in schools, classes on sexual education and family life should be offered.
Parents can also help prevent teenage pregnancy by talking to their children about the risks and responsibilities of sexual relationships, contraception and pregnancy.
