Causes

While the exact cause of depression is unknown, a number of factors can be associated with with its development. Generally depression doesn't occur from one single factor, but from a combination. These factors include:

- ABUSE: Past physical, sexual or emotional abuse can trigger depressive thoughts.


- MEDICATIONS: Some prescription drugs, such as Accutane, can increase your risk of depression as it can stimulate parts of the brain or alter your hormone levels.


- DEATH OR LOSS: Grief from a death or loss of a loved one can, though natural, can increase the risk of depression.


- GENETICS: A family history of depression may increase the risk. It is thought that depression is a complex trait that may be inherited across generations, however it is not considered a genetic disorder.


- SUBSTANCE ABUSE: 30% of people with substance abuse problems also have depression. Substances like alcohol can alter you mental processes, leading to depressive thoughts.
