The British had won the battle of Long Island. The Americans thought at that point that all was lost and there was no hope left for them since almost all their men were killed, captured, and wounded. But in total, 800 Americans were wounded, and 1,000 patriots were captured. Only 293 men were wounded and 31 men were captured.
