This symbol/shield is saying no one messes with me or hurts me with out me doing something about it. Throughout the story we learn what exactly montressor revenge is. It says in the story, "a human foot d'or in a field of azure the sfoot crushes a serpent rampant who fangs are imbedded in the heel." This quote is just explaining the symbol and what the picture represents.
