This condition is present at birth and can be diagnosed during a blood test called Hemoglobin Electrophoresis at a newborn screening test. Symptoms start at about 4-5 months of age and are usually fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness, headaches, cold hands and feet, skin is paler than normal, jaundice in skin in eyes, and a sudden pain called sickle cell crises (blood flow is cut off from organs and limbs and can damage them).
