• In the 1850's most texans still rode horseback or in wagons pulled by horses, oxen, etc.
• Sandbars and rafts made steam boat travel on most rivers nearly impossible
• One exception was the Rio Grande where regular shipping was established from the time of the War with Mexico until the 1850's
• The Butterfield line was a popular stage coach line that ran across North Texas (from Mississippi Valley to the Pacific Coast)
• Railroad construction began in Texas in the 1850's
• By 1860 there were over 400 miles of track in use
