How Texans Lived

• Notable towns at the time included New Braunfels (a center of German immigration), Marshal (a center for trade), and Austin (a political center) although none of these communities could be considered towns
• Texas had 2 manufacturing facilities
- Hat factory in Houston
- Textile factory in Henderson
• Most East Texas towns had sawmills and almost all settled areas had gristmills
