James Monroe claimed the Americas as a U.S protectorate for U.S intervention in Hemispheric affairs. This policy benefitted U.S entrepreneurs who worked to bring the natural resources and agricultural products of the Americas to the world market. Hawaii and Alaska were rich with resources that allowed them the become a imperial power. The Spanish American war boosted the U.S to power. The U.S set up colonial governments in the Philippines in the 19th century.
