Madagascar's History of Cyclones

- A category 5 cyclone called Gafilo struck Madagascar in 2004 and was the most intense tropical storm ever recorded in the South West Indian Ocean. Gafilo left 250$ million dollars in damage with 237 people dead and 181 missing.

- The economy of Madagascar is mostly based on agricultural products. Some of the goods they export are coffee, vanilla, shellfish, sugar, and cotton.

- In 2003, Malagasy exports were both worth $700 million, and it's trade deficit was about $200 million.

- Since Madagascar makes their profits mostly on agriculture, any type of natural disaster like a cyclone, would greatly effect the country's economy.

- The population in Madagascar is approximately 22,924,851 million, the mortality rate due to cyclones is 94.6%, and the economic loss is 94%.

- Over thirty-five house were destroyed over a 8 year period. Bridges and roads are also being destroyed then needing to be rebuilt. This costs the government money they don't have.
