 having any need for slaves. On the other hand the North needed southern cotton in order to industrialize so even although slavery in the North was outlawed, there were few who supported slavery occurring in the South in order to keep the economy stimulated. The South then remained primarily agricultural, and the North industrial. Slavery also shaped the South culturally as well. African-American families were being separated, slaves had to work long hours in the hot sun for no pay, and many times they would be beat by their owners. Many slaves were escaping and fleeing to the North which is when the North and South stood completely divided from each other, and not as a country unified.

Slavery had existed even before America had become a nation. However, it was not until Antebellum America that slavery started posing a threat to the peace in our homes. The South was very reliant on slavery, as owning a plantation that the slaves would work on was their main source of income. The North was very industrial and had many cities where factory work would be done, not
