Before Theseus left, his father, King Aegeus, told his son if he was victorious and killed the beast, to put up the white sails, while if he was slain to leave on the black sails. When Theseus escaped the labyrinth, princess Adriane begged him to take her with him, as her father would surely kill her when he found out she saved Theseus.
Why did his father think him dead?
Theseus reluctantly agreed, but when they stopped in at a close island for supplies, Adriane went to collect bread and wine, Theseus and his crew quickly left without her, for he never truly loved her. However, in his rush to get away, Theseus mforgot to change the sails. When his ship neared Athens, his father saw the black sails and consumed by sadness, as he thought his only son had died, he leaped off a large cliff into the raging sea, that was named the Aegan sea, after the dead King.
