Why was Theseus in the labyrinth?

Every year, seven Athenian boys and seven Athenian girls were forced to go to the island Crete, as a tribute to the tyrant King Minos, the King of Crete. When they got there, King Minos would send them into a vast labyrinth to be devoured by his flesh eating Minotaur. When Theseus got word, he nobly volunteered to go, hoping to slay the beast.
