5. Work with families
-Have regular discussions with parents about how to support homework or ways to help if their child is struggling.
-Help parents connect to and work closely with school ESL teachers. Hold regular meetings with parents and students about setting academic goals and developing a personalized plan for each child. Make sure families are familiar with a variety staff at school. Do not limit staff interaction to only ELL and classroom teachers (Family Engagement Action Plan by Alaska State Board of Education and Early Development, 2013).
-Invite families to join committees that set school policies, goals, programs and activities. The parents' involvement should be active versus passive for effective engagement.
