-Create a network of mentor parents to assist new families in learning about the school.
Research shows that having parents, especially those who are bilingual or monolingual, reach out to new families creates opportunities to discuss shared experiences and provides ways to help one another ("How to Reach out to Parents of ELLs”, 2015).
-Host a family school walk-through tour and provide incentives to families to participate.
Research notes that a school tour can create an opportunity to build, improve and strengthen home-school relations, and create true partners in education. It can be another step in knocking down the wall that often exists between home and school. Offer tours at a variety of times to compensate for varied work schedules, fill the school walls with art and photographs celebrating all student populations, include culturally rich books in the school and classroom libraries. Invite families personally to the school including phone calls, during home visits, and in their native language if possible (Pescatore, 2014).
