Many of Mexica's population worked on chinampas. They contributed to infrastructure such as roads, irrigation systems, temples, and palaces. Cultivators would regularly give tributes.

Family members often sold the youngest member of the family into slavery. They did this due to financial distress. If you were a criminal you could also be a slave.
