Will Smith as Dr. Robert Neville. He is the main character that is exposed to the busy state of New York during an apocalyptic state. All round people are being infected with a disease of sorts that changes you into an aggressive zombie like creature. Dr. Neville, while practically stranded by himself all alone, tries to develope a cure. He has to stay brave during this time and endure his hardships for the greater good. Dr. Neville is able to overcome adversity and creates a sufficient cure that he passes down to a woman and her child that he meets. During a feat where his house is being attacked by hoards of the zombies, Robert sacrifices himself in an attempt to save the woman and her child. The woman and her child go on to bring the cure to a safe zone to be utilized and save the human race.

Dr. Neville's dog, Sam is the other main character. Sam is Robert's only companion for most of his time trying to find a cure. Since Sam is a dog, he is unable to be affected by the disease through the air, however, Sam can be infected if bitten. Sam provides strength for Robert and a will to go on and find a cure. Sam was loved strongly by the Doctor. Through a mistake made by the Sam, he is bitten while Dr. Neville tries to save him. The death of Sam provides even more courage to the doctor in a sense of revenge.
