The coach and the basketball players use LITERACY as a form of communication to talk to one another on and off the court, they all share the same form of LANGUAGE OR LINGO. They communicate solely through play calls such as: “I’m open!”, “Shoot!”, “Charge!”, “Fast Break!”, “Motion!”, “Foul!” etc.

A DISCOURSE COMMUNITY is a group of people that have goals or purposes and use communication to achieve their goals through a self defined group, common interest, same language and lingo.

Basketball players are apart of a discourse community simply because they all join together as a SELF-DEFINED GROUP and are seen with a common interest to persevere and win.

LITERACY plays an important role in basketball because the power of literacy lies not only in the ability to read and write, but rather in an individual’s capacity to put those skills to work in shaping the course of his or her own life, in this case it would underline in actually playing the sport.

LITERACY PRACTICES can be seen throughout the game through the attitudes and feelings of the basketball players.

A basketball game is seen as a LITERACY EVENT because it is the event at which basketball players are competing at on a basketball court. Games can be broadcasted live on television, and are also published in live streams media such as newspapers, magazines, blogs, videos, online publications, and more.
