Pakistan, India & Kashmir

A problem occurred when the English Empire in India broke up in 1947 after World War 2. Two separate countries were created for religious reasons:India and Pakistan. They both wanted Kashmir (predominantly Muslim land) that was between India and Pakistan. It had very little control, and when India and Kashmir created an arrangement in which India was given control, war immediately broke out between India and Pakistan. There was a U.N.- arranged cease-fire in July of 1949, and Pakistan ended up with one third of Kashmir's territory, while the rest was under India's control. Since then, war has been on and off between the two countries.
