In Southeast Algeria in 1954, the War for independence began. France responded negatively to Algerian demands, as they saw the uprisings as acts of treason. They tried to seal off the country to block weapon shipments to rebels from Tunisia and Morocco. They ended the revolt in 1958. Algeria declared their independence on July 5th, 1962. Kenya gained independence on Dec. 12, 1963 led by Jomo Kenyatta, the First Prime Minister and president of Kenya from 1963-1978 when he died.
