Carver was born into slavery; he one of the many children born to Mary and Giles, and enslaved couple. Their "owner" was Moses Carver. Most of his family was kidnapped after the Civil War, but only he was returned to Moses Carver. When slaves became free the orphan George was took in by the Carvers and raised as their owns.
