The invention allowed for people in the same town to quickly communicate, by multi-mode fibers which were complex and allowed to connect to multiple households, without having to meet face to face. That allowed for quicker intercommunication which was then used for telecommuting by single mode fibers which was like one long fiber over a long distance. By allowing for more communication trade was increased and in the case of a single town needing help for something they could expect a somewhat quick response by using fiber optics
