Social conditions in 1854

In 1854 many people only communicated through the usage of the mailman system so it would take a a few weeks to truly get any form of communication through long distances. Each city was mainly self run or self governed because of this and led to poorer living conditions because of lack of trade in short time left some with only what could be found in the city.
