In fear that African American voting would gain African Americans to much political power many voting restrictions were put on black voters. First one being a poll tax, a very high fee that must have been paid if one wanted to vote it was usually out of financial reach for most, next literacy tests were implemented that we're supposed to see if a person could read and write on a very basic level, but Black voters were given much more difficult tests that were basically designed to keep them out. Lastly just to make sure poor whites could still vote grandfather clauses were placed that if you had previously voted or someone in your family had already voted you were exempt from any voting restrictions.
