Eradication

Reason

Effect

In 1872 the Federal government began eradicating the grey wolf population by increasing the reward for their hides. By the 1930's grey wolves had been eliminated from all 48 states with high numbers remaining in Alaska. This continued until 1965.

Elk populations exploded which led to the overgrazing of plants. The decline of plants affected beaver and bird populations by eliminating their natural habitats.

The federal government feared that the grey wolves would have a negative impact on wildlife as well as farmers' livestock.
