Texans used to use wagons and horses to get around. During that time most rivers were covered with too much debris to travel; the Rio Grande was the only river that steamboats could drift down on. Most towns had stage coaches that delivered mail and carried people. Trains were important too, and railroad track was laid around Galveston and Houston.
