Another controversy involved affirmative action programs. These programs committed the government and private companies to give special consideration to groups discriminated against in the past, both women and members of minority groups. Some critics called affirmative action programs “reverse discrimination.” This issue attracted some Democratic blue-collar workers to the Republican ranks, where they would help elect Ronald Reagan to the presidency. The Reagan Democrats, as they were known, would help Republicans win many victories in the 1980s.
