4.What groups were part of the New Right?
The New Right Coalition By 1980, conservative groups had formed a powerful political coalition known as the New Right. A key concern of many conservatives in the New Right was the size of government and its role in the economy. They proposed cutting government-funded social programs.
Other groups in the New Right wanted to restore what they considered Christian values to society. Members of the Moral Majority, led by the Reverend Jerry Falwell of Virginia, wanted to follow the dictates of the Bible and revive the traditional values they believed had strengthened the country in the past.
Falwell and other evangelists used the power of television to reach millions of people. In a format that became known as televangelism, they appealed to viewers to contribute money to their campaign. They delivered fervent sermons on specific political issues and used the money they raised to back conservative politicians.
