Summer:
Mst people believe that summer when the earth is closest to the sun. This is one of many misconceptions about the seasons. Summer occurs in the earth's revolution when it is furthest from the sun. The distance from the sun has nothing to do with the seasons, but has to do with the tilt. When earth is experiencing summer, the northern hemisphere is pointed towards e sun. Summer is caused by the direct sunlight from the sun that is angled toward the northern hemisphere.
Winter:
Again, most people believe that winter is when the earth is furthest from the sun. This is once again a misconception. Winter occurs when the northern hemisphere is pointed away from the sun. This causes winter by indirect sunlight. Even though the earth is closest at this point in the revolution, the distance does not affect the seasons. The tilt however, is the main contributor to winter, summer, spring, and autumn.
