Analyze

This scene paints a portrait of a son and his mother. It looks very posed and emotionless. The stiff figures and blank faces express this vacancy. The quiet color scheme again emphasizes the blankness of the piece. While their faces seem flawless and untouched, the textured background adds diversity. The vertical shapes being the figures help maintain one's eye on them. Gorky portrays his piece with a dullness and lack of life, but manages to keep the viewer's attention.
